The 8th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE is ahead of us!
The next, eighth edition of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE will take place on December 7-9 at the International Congress Centre in Katowice.The event is invariably available to everyone! In the rich programme you will find attractions popularising almost every field of science – so you have the opportunity not only to choose what interests you, but also to experience something new.

The event is invariably free and available to everyone, but in order to enter the Festival area and freely use most of the attractions, you need to register and download an individual, free ticket. At the same time, we will open registration for entry for organised groups (including participation in the ŚFN on Monday, December 9) and registration for selected activities covered by the limit. Registration for activities with a limited number of places will be available to both individual participants and organised groups after obtaining a ticket to the 8th ŚFN.
The programme of the first activities requiring registration will be announced on November 7 in the evening – these will be selected stages, workshops and some lectures requiring registration. In the coming weeks, we will gradually expand the offer of activities to sign up for and we will publish the full programme of the ŚFN.

Silesian Scientific Award
This year, the winners of the Silesian Scientific Award will once again be announced. As every year, this prestigious award will be presented as part of the Silesian Science Festival. It is awarded by the universities co-organising the ŚFN, and the winners are selected by the Chapter of the Silesian Scientific Award.
The award is a distinction for those who significantly contribute to the development of science and present outstanding artistic achievements, as well as promote Silesian science in the national and international arena.
This year's Silesian Scientific Award gala will take place on December 8 at 7:00 p.m. on the Scena Doliny Rawy (International Congress Centre in Katowice).
The winners from seven Silesian public universities will be announced: the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, the Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, the Silesian University of Technology, the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, the University of Economics in Katowice, the University of Silesia in Katowice and Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa. In addition, an award for the best PhD student and Special Prizes will be awarded.

Meet the ambassadors of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE!
Our ambassadors – researchers, journalists and science communicators – are loyal friends of the SSF and proudly represent it in the country and internationally. They are true science lovers who have been cooperating with the Festival for years and who are close to the idea of the SSF as a place open and accessible to everyone who wants to gain knowledge in various fields of science. Meet the people who together with us create the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE!
The unique group of SSF ambassadors includes, among others:
● Jarosław Juszkiewicz – a radio journalist, owner of the Polish Voices voice-over studio. Since 2021, he has been part of the Radio 357 team, where he prepares podcasts and the weekly "Rzecz Technologiczna" broadcast. Currently, Jarosław Juszkiewicz works closely with the Planetarium – Silesian Science Park, where he organises popular science screenings. A winner of numerous awards, such as the First Prize in the Silesia Press Journalist Competition for a series of documentary broadcasts "Divine Equation – in Search of the Theory of Everything" (2021).
● Ewelina Zambrzycka-Kościelnicka – a popular science journalist, associated with "National Geographic Polska", "Focus" and the reporter magazine "Weekend.Gazeta.pl". She is a co-author of the books „Człowiek. Istota kosmiczna”, „Kosmiczne wyzwania” and „Odważ się robić wielkie rzeczy”, as well as a spokesperson for the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
● dr Tomasz Rożek – a science journalist and physicist, populariser of science. He runs his own program on eM radio entitled "Labyrinths of Knowledge", he is also active in the morning program of Radio 357, answering "Questions from the Moon" asked by listeners. He cooperated with many national magazines, like "Gazeta Wyborcza", "National Geographic" and "Gość Niedzielny", where he is currently the head of the "Science and Economy" section. He received the title of Science Populariser in 2008, and his book entitled „Nauka − po prostu. Wywiady z wybitnymi” was recognised as the best popular science publication of the 2010/2011 season. A founder and president of the Fundacji Nauka. To Lubię, in which he popularises knowledge from various fields of science.
● dr Agata Kołodziejczyk – a neurobiologist and astrobiologist. In her scientific work, she focuses on the study of the cosmos and the mutual relations between biological sciences and astronomy. She is the first Polish woman to get into the European Space Agency, where, as an expert in the field of biomimetics, she developed a revolutionary solution for multi-module orbital telescopes. She also co-created the first analogue space base where simulations of extraterrestrial missions are carried out. For her achievements, she received the Artur Rojszczak Award (2013), the Frombork Gold Medal (2018) and a nomination for the title of Superhero of "Wysokie Obcasy" 2017. She is currently a member of the forScience Foundation, the World Research Centre and the private space agency Valles Marineris.
● Wiktor Niedzicki – a radio and television journalist, academic lecturer, author of the "Laboratory" program, in which he popularises knowledge about physics and the most important achievements of technology. Currently, he is a senior lecturer at the Warsaw University of Technology and a member of the Academy of Engineering in Poland. He popularises science among both children and adults – his original shows "Einstein's Legacy", "The History of Dirt" and "Space in Our Home" (also presented in Bulgaria), are very popular.
● prof. Katarzyna Kłosińska – a linguist, Chairwoman of the Council for the Polish Language at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She specialises, among others, in normative linguistics, sociolinguistics, lexicology and semantics, as well as ethnolinguistics. She is associated with the Institute of Polish Language at the University of Warsaw and the Language Observatory of the University of Warsaw, which creates a dictionary of Polish neologisms. She also talks about language on the radio – she hosted the program "Where do words come from" and the series "What's going on in speech?" (2005–2020) on Polish Radio Three. Currently, she analyses the contemporary Polish language and discovers its secrets on Radio 357.
● dr Łukasz Lamża – a natural philosopher and science journalist. He is an employee of the Copernicus Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies at the Jagiellonian University and a member of the editorial board of "Tygodnik Powszechny". He conducts research in the field of theoretical biology, specialising in comparative protist biology. He is the author of numerous books, like "The Universe Step by Step" (2017), "Parallel Worlds" (2020), "It's Hard to Say" (2022). He has been nominated twice for the Grand Press award (category: specialist journalism). He hosts a weekly review of the scientific press on YouTube entitled "We read nature", which was nominated for the POP Science Award 2024.
● Łukasz Wilczyński – a populariser of science, originator and co-organiser of the European Rover Challenge project. He is the president of the Space Communications Alliance – the world's first global PR network for the space sector and the founder of Planet Partners and the European Space Foundation. In 2017, he received the Tiuterra Crystal award (a crystal containing fragments of Earth and Mars) presented by the Austrian Space Forum for his contribution to the promotion and development of space topics around the world.

The 8th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE will take place on December 7-9 and will be the culmination of the entire year of celebrations of awarding Katowice the title of the European City of Science 2024.
OFF Science – Review of Garage Inventions
As part of the 8th Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE, we are once again organising the OFF Science competition – Review of Garage Inventions! Until Sunday, November 10, we accept proposals for original concepts of inventions, devices or innovative technical solutions. The final of the competition will take place on December 8 during the 8th SSF. The authors of the best projects will receive cash prizes in three categories – the Competition Committee Award, the Festival Audience Award and the Internet Users' Award. Applications are accepted via the form.
Let's choose the winners of the POP Science Award 2024 together
Until November 5, 2024, 23:59, an online voting is underway to select the winners of the POP Science Award of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE 2024. This distinction is awarded to individuals and projects popularising science in three national categories (video blog, website/blog, radio broadcast/podcast) and two regional categories under a common name – think globally, act locally – separately for people employed at the region's universities and residents of the Silesian Voivodeship.
