JDU FOOTBALL PLAYERS WITH GOLD IN FINALS OF POLISH ACADEMIC CHAMPIONSHIP IN BYDGOSZCZ
The team of Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa won the final of the Polish Men's Academic Football Championships in Bydgoszcz (the tournament took place on June 16-19, 2024, the final on June 19). In the match for gold, the Częstochowa players executed penalties better than the team of the University of Rzeszów. The bronze medal at the Polish Academy of Physical Education 2024 was won by the AWF Warsaw team.
The Football Championships in the city on the Brda River gathered over 320 participants from 16 teams selected in four qualifying tournaments. Already before the final game it was clear that due to the unexpected elimination of last year's winners from the Gdańsk University of Technology and the vice-champions from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, a completely different podium awaits us.
On the other hand, the first matches on the pitches of Chemik and Polonia from Bydgoszcz convinced us that we are in for high-level duels. In the group stage, several teams proved that they can confidently think about the highest places of the AMP 2024. Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa and the bronze medalists of the AMP 2023 from the University of Szczecin advanced to the quarter-finals with a full set of points, and the University of Lodz and the University of Physical Education in Kraków, playing in Group B, did not experience defeat in the first three matches of the final tournament either.
After the quarter-finals, however, it was certain that the medalists of the Polish Academic Championships would change in their entirety. The University of Szczecin was eliminated from the medal game, losing to AWF Warsaw after penalties. A series of "elevens" was also needed to determine the semi-finalist in the match between JDU Czestochowa and UG Gdańsk. The Częstochowa players did not stop at the semi-finals – in the match for the final, they confidently defeated AWF Kraków 3:0.
"In all leagues, it's practically the end of the season. It was the optimal date to be able to gather and play a tournament like the AMP final. We came here for the final and I hope that we will finish it with gold – announced Paweł Marchewka, the player of JDU Czestochowa, before the final match.
"The AMPs are probably the best thing that can await students who have something to do with sport. We have been preparing for this championship throughout the year. The road to the tournament was not easy for us. At the beginning we had a slight stumble, but we quickly eliminated our mistakes and we were doing better from match to match – added Kacper Benz, a player of the University of Rzeszów. who defeated AWF Warsaw 1:0 in the 1/2 finals. And it was the players from Rzeszów who started the most important match of the tournament better and in the first minutes they took advantage of the mistake of the opponents' goalkeeper, putting the ball into the net from the closest distance. However, the students of JDU managed to equalize and only penalty shootouts determined the new academic champions of Polish men's football. They were the Częstochowa team, who kept more cool in the series of "elevens" and won 3:2. In the match for the third place, AWF Warsaw turned out to be better than AZS Kraków, winning 4:2.
Once again, during the AMP, a former star of academic sports was commemorated and a memorial distinction was presented. The best player of the tournament was Mateusz Margas (JDU Czestochowa), who received the Adam Obrubański Award – a footballer, referee, outstanding activist and journalist. The top scorer was Błażej Starzycki (University of Szczecin).
The AMP 2024 final in men's football was the first to be played in this discipline in Bydgoszcz. The celebration of academic football turned out to be a success in many respects, and the plans of KU AZS UKW Bydgoszcz, the host of the tournament, already include the organisation of further sports events.
"This is such an unusual event for Bydgoszcz, because we have specialised in water sports so far. It was a big logistical and sporting undertaking, but I think that our final was good in terms of organisation. The weather was good for the players and, what must be emphasized, from the first matches there was fierce competition and a very high sports level. Next year we will face another big challenge, because we are organising the European Academic Rowing Championships for the second time, but we will try to fulfil it," said Katarzyna Domańska, President of KU AZS UKW Bydgoszcz.
Let us remind you that the medalists of the Polish Academic Women's Football Championships were selected at the end of May in Gdańsk. The title was won by the players of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, who defeated the University of Gdańsk 2:0 in the final.
The organiser of the Polish Academic Men's Football Championships was AZS UKW Bydgoszcz.
The Polish Academic Championships are co-financed by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism. The strategic sponsor of AZS is the PZU Group.
